■ "Declaration of the Fundamental Principles of the New Egyptian State" released
On Tuesday 1 November 2011, the Egyptian government presented to a closed meeting of around 500 political activists its latest draft of a document entitled the “Declaration of the Fundamental Principles of the New Egyptian State” (English and Arabic). More than two dozen drafts of this document have already been produced; many previous versions were referred to as the “supra-constitutional principles document”. This current drafts seeks to establish a number of fundamental constitutional principles that any future constituent assembly will have to abide by when drafting or amending the constitution. The current draft also sets out a number of rules that are to be used to select the constituent assembly’s members and to guide the constitutional process.
