Australia: NSW calls for constitutional recognition of indigenous people

<p>New South Wales has become the first state government to support a referendum to change the constitution to recognise indigenous Australians.</p><p>NSW Premier Mike Baird said he would encourage other state and territory leaders to do the same.</p><p>The Australian government has said it would hold a referendum but has not set a date.</p><p>Mr Baird said it would take some time "before we convince the entire country" to vote for the change.</p><p>Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a long-term supporter of constitutional recognition of indigenous Australians, has been speaking to conservative groups who do not want the constitution changed.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><div>[toc hidden:1]</div>
