The Philippines: House girds for war over Constitution

<p>Lawmakers are set to clash over House Speaker Sonny Belmonte's resolution that seeks to amend the economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution. </p><p>Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez said the House Independent Minority bloc is supporting the measure even as progressive lawmakers vow to oppose any attempt to remove protectionist policies in the Constitution.</p> <p>The House of Representatives committee on constitutional amendments will take up the measure on Tuesday.</p> <p>In a statement, Romualdez said the independent bloc is <br> supporting the call of the House leadership to amend the 1987 Constitution "as long as it will not touch any provisions which will extend terms of the current elected officials."</p>
